How Long Does a Padel Racket Last? Care Tips and Accessories
How long a padel racket lasts, the signs it needs replacing, what damages rackets in South African conditions and the accessories that protect them.

A good padel racket is an investment, so it is worth knowing how long it should last and how to make it last longer. Here is what wears a racket out, the signs it is time for a new one, and the simple accessories that protect your racket and your game.
How long does a padel racket last?
It depends mostly on how often you play. As a rough guide:
| How often you play | Typical racket life |
|---|---|
| Once a week or less | 2 years or more |
| 2 to 3 times a week | About 1 to 1.5 years |
| Daily or competitive play | 6 months to a year |
Rackets rarely break suddenly. Instead, the foam core slowly loses its elasticity with every hit, so the racket gradually feels “dead”: less pop, less control and more vibration in your arm.
Signs your padel racket needs replacing
- The ball no longer comes off the face with the same speed for the same swing.
- You feel more vibration in your wrist or elbow than before.
- There are cracks in the frame or soft spots or bubbles in the face.
- The face has been sanded flat in places, losing its grip on the ball.
- You hear a rattle inside the racket.
What damages a padel racket
Heat
This is the big one in South Africa. A car boot on a summer afternoon can get hot enough to soften the core and the resins in the frame. Never leave your racket in the car. Keep it in a padded racket bag and in the shade.
Hitting the floor and walls
Scraping the frame on the ground or clipping the glass is part of the game, but every knock chips the edge of the frame. This is exactly what frame protectors are for.
Moisture and cold
Sweat, rain and damp kit bags are not kind to grips or cores. Dry your racket after playing and store it somewhere dry.
Accessories that make your racket last
Frame protectors
A frame protector is a strip of tough tape that wraps the top edge of the racket, where most impacts happen. It adds a few grams and saves a lot of chips and cracks. Try the Padel Plug Clear Frame Protector if you want it invisible, or the Padel Plug Carbon Frame Protector for extra toughness.
Overgrips
The overgrip is the thin wrap over your racket’s handle. It gets slippery from sweat and should be replaced every 8 to 10 hours of play, or sooner in the heat. A fresh overgrip improves control instantly and is the cheapest upgrade in padel. Try the Adidas Padel Overgrips (set of 3).
Hesacore grips
Hesacore grips have a raised, honeycomb-like texture that spreads the pressure of your grip across your hand. Players use them to hold the racket more loosely, which reduces strain on the forearm and elbow. Choose from black, white, pink and teal.
A proper racket bag
A padded or thermal racket bag protects against knocks and helps with the heat. Browse our padel bags.
Padel balls wear out too
Padel balls lose pressure quickly, especially in hot weather and at altitude on the Highveld. Once they feel soft or stop bouncing to the height they used to, open a fresh can. Pressurised match balls usually give a few good sessions; pressureless balls last longer and are great for practice. See all padel balls.
Care checklist
- Never leave your racket in a hot car.
- Fit a frame protector from day one.
- Replace your overgrip every 8 to 10 hours of play.
- Wipe the racket down and dry it after playing.
- Store it in a padded bag, away from heat and damp.
