Best Padel Shoes in South Africa: A Buying Guide for 2026

Sole patterns, fit, support and when to replace them, plus the padel shoes we stock in South Africa.

Best Padel Shoes in South Africa: A Buying Guide for 2026

Your racket gets all the attention, but your shoes decide whether you reach the ball. Padel is played on artificial grass topped with sand, and most of the movement is short, sharp and sideways. A good padel shoe grips that surface, holds your foot steady when you change direction and survives the abrasion of the sand. This guide covers what to look for, how to get the fit right and the padel shoes we stock in South Africa.

Why you need proper padel shoes

Running shoes are built for forward motion. They have soft, high cushioning and a smooth outsole, which is exactly wrong on a sanded court: you roll over the edge of the shoe on lateral pushes and slide when you try to stop. Tennis shoes are much closer, and an all-court tennis shoe will do the job, but a dedicated padel shoe is designed for the sand-on-grass surface. If you want the full side-by-side, read our guide to padel shoes vs tennis and running shoes.

Sole patterns explained

The outsole pattern is the single biggest difference between padel shoes, so match it to the courts you play on.

  • Herringbone: a zigzag tread that grips well and lets your foot pivot. It is the most versatile pattern and works on most club courts.
  • Omni: small rubber studs or nubs that dig into sand. Best on courts with a lot of loose sand, where a flat herringbone can skate.
  • Hybrid: herringbone in the areas you pivot on, with studs where you push off. A good middle ground if you play at different clubs.

If you are not sure what your club’s courts are like, look at how much sand gathers at the edges and in the corners. More sand means more grip needed.

What else to look for

  • Lateral support: a firm heel counter and a stable base stop your foot rolling when you stretch for a wide ball.
  • Toe protection: padel players drag the toe of the back foot on serves and low volleys. A reinforced toe area makes the shoe last much longer.
  • Cushioning: enough to protect your knees on jumps and overheads, but not so much that you sit high and unstable.
  • Weight: lighter shoes feel quicker, heavier ones usually offer more support and durability. Most players are happiest in the middle.
  • Breathability: a mesh upper helps on hot South African afternoons.

How padel shoes should fit

Buy padel shoes in your normal sports-shoe size and try them on later in the day, when your feet are slightly bigger. You want about a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe, and no movement at the heel when you push sideways. Wear the socks you play in when you try them. If you are between sizes, WhatsApp us your usual size in your running shoes and we will help you choose.

When to replace your padel shoes

Replace them when the tread under the ball of your foot has worn smooth, or when you start sliding on courts that used to feel fine. Worn soles cost you grip first, then support. Players who play several times a week usually notice this long before the upper looks tired.
