Padel Bags: How to Choose the Right One (South Africa Guide)
Racket bag, backpack or cover? How to choose a padel bag, why a thermal compartment matters, and the bags we stock.

A padel bag does more than carry your kit. It protects a racket you may have paid R4,000 or more for from heat, knocks and the boot of your car. The right bag depends on how many rackets you carry, how often you play and whether you go straight from work to the court. Here is how to choose, and the padel bags we stock in South Africa.
The four types of padel bag
- Racket bag (competition or XL): the classic long padel bag with a main racket compartment, often thermal, plus space for clothes, shoes and balls. Built for players who carry two or more rackets or play tournaments.
- Medium racket bag: the same shape, smaller. Ideal for one or two rackets and the basics for a single session.
- Backpack: carries one or two rackets in a racket sleeve, with room for a laptop or a change of clothes. The best choice if you play before or after work.
- Racket cover: a padded sleeve for a single racket. Not a bag, but the cheapest way to protect your racket inside any sports bag.
Why a thermal compartment matters in South Africa
Padel rackets have an EVA foam core, and heat affects how it behaves. Leave a racket in a hot car on a summer afternoon and the core can soften, the face can warp and the racket loses its feel. A thermal compartment, a lined pocket that slows down temperature change, protects your racket between the car and the court. On the Highveld in summer, or anywhere at the coast, it is worth having. Our guide to looking after your padel racket covers more on heat and storage.
Features worth paying for
- A separate shoe compartment: keeps sand and sweaty shoes away from your clothes and rackets.
- Thermal racket compartment: see above.
- Padded backpack straps: easier to carry from the parking lot to the far court than a single shoulder strap.
- A small valuables pocket: for your phone, keys and card, close at hand during changeovers.
- Durable base: padel bags get put down on gravel, sand and wet concrete. A reinforced base lasts longer.
Which size do you need?
Playing once or twice a week with one racket? A backpack or medium bag is enough. Carrying a spare racket, extra overgrips, a towel and a change of clothes, or playing league matches? Go for a full racket bag. If you are building a kit list, our padel bag checklist covers what to take.
