How to Look After Your Padel Racket: 9 Care Tips
Nine simple ways to protect your padel racket from heat, knocks and wear so it feels better for longer.

A good padel racket is an investment, and a little care makes it feel better for longer. Most broken rackets we see in South Africa are not caused by smashes. They are caused by heat, frame clashes and hitting the floor. Here are nine simple ways to look after your padel racket and get the most out of it.
1. Keep it out of the heat
This is the big one in South Africa. A car boot in summer can get extremely hot, and heat can soften the core and weaken the bond between the layers of the face. Never leave your racket in a parked car. Take it inside with you, and use a padel bag with a thermal compartment when you travel.
2. Use a frame protector
Scrapes against the glass and the floor wear through the frame over time. A clear or carbon frame protector takes the damage instead of your racket and costs a fraction of a new one. Replace it when it is worn through.
3. Do not hit the ground or the walls
Low balls near the glass are tempting, but scooping the racket off the turf or banging it into the wall causes most frame chips and cracks. Let difficult balls go or play them off the glass instead.
4. Watch out for racket clashes
Two players going for the same ball in the middle is a classic way to crack a frame. Agree with your partner who takes the middle (usually the player with the forehand) and call “mine” early.
5. Store it in a cover or bag
A cover protects against knocks, dust and sun. Storing your racket flat in a cupboard at home is better than leaning it against a wall where it can fall.
6. Change your overgrip regularly
A slippery grip makes you squeeze harder and is more likely to send the racket flying. Follow our guide on how to change a padel overgrip and refresh it every few weeks.
7. Wipe it down after playing
A quick wipe with a dry cloth removes sand, sweat and dust from the face and frame. Avoid harsh cleaning products, which can damage the finish.
8. Check the wrist cord
The cord is there to keep the racket on your wrist. If it is frayed or the stopper has slipped, it is time for a replacement before it fails mid-swing.
9. Inspect for cracks
Run your fingers around the frame every so often. Small chips in the paint are normal. Deep cracks in the frame or a rattle inside the racket are signs it needs attention. Our guide on how long a padel racket lasts explains when it is time to replace it.
